Packing Computers

Computers are one of the most difficult things to pack because they are heavy and at the same time, fragile. So, they require extra attention, time and effort to pack. The first step is to remove the accessories like keyboard, mouse, speakers, microphone, webcam and other attachments. Also, the wiring should be disconnected and each of these accessories and wires should be packed separately.

It is best to use the original manufacturer's packing, if available. This is because the original boxes will be of the right dimensions and the packing material will protect the computer from damages. However, if the original packaging boxes are damaged or reused numerous times, then it is a good idea to get new cardboard boxes of similar dimensions because repeated usage can weaken the packing materials. Irrespective of whether the original packing box is used or a new one of similar dimensions, it is a good idea to place it inside an outer box for more protection.

The outer box should be made of strong material like double-layered corrugated cardboard that can withstand the transit. Ideally, the size of the outer box should be about 6” larger than the original box and out of this the bottom 3” should be padded with packing materials. While choosing packing materials, it is important to avoid styrofoam peanuts and other materials that can get crushed with pressure. Bubble wrap is one of the best options for computers. Each of the parts, including the monitor and the CPU should be wrapped in two or three layers of bubble wrap for extra protection.

Once the wrapping is done, the different parts of the computer have to be placed in the inner box. The additional spaces inside the box can be filled with cushioning materials so that they fit in tightly. Once this is done, the flaps have to be closed and sealed using adhesive tapes that are sensitive to pressure. The top, bottom and sides have to be sealed and then the inner box should be placed inside the outer box. The outer box should also be sealed using the same adhesive tape and the entire content can be plastic-wrapped to prevent any moisture from getting inside.

The moving boxes as well as the packing material can be bought from moving companies. Though it may cost a little more money, it is definitely worth it. Another option is to take help from the moving companies to pack for you. With their experience, you are sure to have a damage-proof packing. Besides, this can also save a lot of time and effort.
