Packing Glassware
Glassware and other breakables should be packed with care because they can be damaged
easily. So, you should plan to spend additional time and get some extra packing
materials for the process.
The first step is to find sturdy moving boxes.
It is a good idea to have an inner and an outer box for packing glassware for more
protection. There are specialized boxes available for packing glassware and they
are your best option. Specialty box stores sell them and they have numerous cells
inside the box for every individual item. Once the boxes are obtained, the next
step is to prepare them for packing. The bottom of the box should be lined with
paper and other packing materials. Crumpled paper is better than neatly folded paper
because it can absorb the shock better during transit. If you have young children
around, you can keep an eye on them by having them help out with paper crumpling.
The next step is to prepare the glassware for packing. This is a good time to discard
or donate unwanted glassware to save time, effort and space. Good glassware that
has never been used can be given to local charities so that it can be used by those
who need it. You can pack the remaining glassware, starting with the sturdiest at
the bottom. The most fragile items can be placed on the top. Each and every item
should be wrapped in paper and more than one sheet should be used for fragile items.
The open end of the dishes should be stuffed with more paper for cushioning. As
you wrap each sheet, roll the entire glassware in the sheet and tuck the remaining
paper on the sides. In general, more wrapping and crumpling is better for the glassware.
If you have a specialty packing box with cells, then you can place one glassware
item in each cell and add packing material on the bottom, sides and top of each
cell. It is not recommended to have more than one item in the same cell because
there is a possibility that they may collide during transit. After packing all the
glassware in the cells, more packing materials should be placed on top for additional
protection. Finally, the box should be sealed using packing tapes and marked as
“Fragile – Glassware” to help the movers to know to handle it properly.
